Dear Parents,
As we endeavor to bolster our Reading and Math programs, our third and fourth grade teachers are targeting reading comprehension and retelling. Students are focusing on reading the questions first, then the selection. They then identify the type of question asked using RAP which stands for: Right here, copy from the text; Author and me, my answer backed up by something the author said; and Pictures and graphics. For retelling, students are dividing the selection into beginning, middle one, middle two, and ending. Extended answer practice is being targeted in all subject areas.

Mrs. Burgett, our ReadingIntervention teacher, is working with our first and second graders in need of receiving intensive phonics instruction. Teachers are reinforcing and extending this instruction in their lessons. Have your student demonstrate the Phonics Dance for you!

All classes have groups participating in the Leveled Readers and or Soar to Success program that uses predicting, questioning, decoding, and sumarizing strategies to build confident readers.

Volunteer tutors assist students with reading strategies and math concepts. We have some faculty members tutoring small groups in math and reading concepts during the day.

And as always, we need our children's first and best teachers, the parents, to encourage reading for pleasure by reading with and to your child. According to research, 30 to 60 minutes of daily reading is required for children to become successful readers. This is the most valuable academic tool you can provide for your child's academic success. We truly appreciate your endeavors in this area. Together we hope to develop a school full of avid, enthusiastic readers!
