Discipline

Discipline does not appear as a subject, however, it underlies the whole educational structure. It is this training that develops self-control, character, orderliness, and efficiency. It is the key to good conduct and proper consideration of other people.

With an understanding of the purpose of discipline in a school, students should form a correct attitude toward it, and not only do their part in making the school an effective place of learning, but develop the habit of self-restraint which will make them a better person. To aid in this endeavor, we have adopted an assertive discipline program which is based on the following:

l. No student has the right to disrupt the teaching process.

2. No student has the right to stop anyone else from learning.

3. The behavior of the student in school is ultimately the responsibility of the parent and student. If a student's behavior becomes disruptive to the educational program, a danger to other students, or becomes uncontrollable, the school may legally suspend or expel the student from school. Parents may be held legally liable for vandalism, damage to school property, or injury to students or staff for which their child is responsible.

4. The school expects that parents will cooperate with and support the school when the child must be disciplined.

5. Parents and teachers should discuss problems a child displays before the problems become serious. If the parent is aware of situations in the home or in the school that may distress the child, these should be discussed with the teacher before they result in discipline problems.

6. There is to be no fighting, bullying, gum chewing, baseballs, or footballs at school or on the playground.

Discipline Plan

l. Each teacher has a discipline plan. Parents will be sent a copy of their child's teacher's discipline plan at the beginning of the year.

2. Each discipline plan has a progressive hierarchy of penalties and loss of privileges. Parents should be aware of these and seek ways to support the teacher when these penalties must be imposed.
